I am a web/graphic designer who loves a beautifully designed website. I've always believed that having an aesthetically pleasing site plays a crucial role in properly showcasing your work.
You don't have to be a million dollar company, but you sure can look like one.
It was the year 2000 … I probably should tell you that because now you know I'm no spring chicken! I was taking evening college courses for graphic design and working in sales at a computer training center during the day.
I'm a terrible sales person by the way. Put someone in front of me who is interested in what I am selling and I can talk all day, but I despised making cold calls and trying to close deals with people who are just not interested.
This girl ain't got no closing skills. (or grammar skills obviously)
My job was to sell computer training classes for applications like Word, Excel and other office type software. I also sold certified courses for computer support tech and systems engineer type jobs.
At the time, way back in what now seems like the olden days of web design, they were just starting to offer Certified Internet Webmaster training courses. I began to realize that every time I met with a new customer that was interested in getting a certification, that I always spoke the most about the CIW courses. I thought being a web designer/developer would be the coolest job!
Let's just be honest, I really hated my job. Did I mention that I'm not a great sales person?
So one Thursday morning, I sat down at my desk, dreading the list of cold calls I had to make only to get hung up on by most people, and I had my lightbulb moment. The kind or realization that slaps you in the head and says "hey, are you listening."
I realized that the reason I sold more web design and CIW courses than other more popular certified training was because deep down I wanted to design and build websites. It's graphic design mixed with a heap of technical challenges, and it was right up my alley!
So I quit, on Thursday, and I started my training, on Monday. And I've never looked back. I've been blessed with an amazing career and built lots of great (and lots of not so great) websites over the last 16 years.
I am truly one of those people that can say they love what they do. I get to be creative, I get to solve problems, I get to design and build websites.
But for a long time, there was something missing.
The sites I built had become mostly industrial in nature, and even though I enjoyed building each and every one, and gained a ton of great experience, I didn't feel like I was able to be as creative as I wanted to be.
I had a vision of helping and teaching other bloggers, creative entrepreneurs, stay-at-home moms who are trying to start and grow their own businesses, how to design and build a beautiful website.
Because I believe that having a website with great content is most important, but equally as important is how you package and present that content. A beautifully designed website gives you that much more credibility in what you share with your audience.
And you want your readers to view you as an expert in your niche, so you want to make sure your site design says that about you.
I launched CreativBlooms with the intent of providing resources, inspiration, helpful tips and information in 3 key areas:
To provide you with web design inspiration to help you create a beautiful blog or website. Maybe you have a great website in place, but you are looking for some new design techniques or a little color inspiration. It's my goal to help you take a site that you think is just ok, and turn it into a website you love.
I am a huge believer in the power of positive thinking. If I'm not glued to my computer working or spending time with family and friends, you will probably find me reading, or listening to an audio book. I love a great fiction book, but more than that, I really love a great book on positivity, motivation or anything that helps me stay focused on reaching for my dreams.
It's my goal to share with you some of the information I've learned over the years, so you can also reach for your dreams. It's not always an easy task, starting a business and all, but if I can help just one person get through the struggles of daily life, then that's more than enough for me.
My experience lies mostly in web design and development, but oh how I love to tinker around with graphics and create fun designs.
In 2012, I opened an Etsy store for a few months and created what I thought at the time were really cute web graphics kits. I say it like that because I look back at my designs and I can't even understand how anyone purchased even one kit, let alone 64 kits (insert launghing emoji with tears here), but they did.
I think it was back then when the seed was planted that one day I wanted to run my own web design business and create fun graphics for people to use on their websites. And even though my designs were not so great back then, it started the wheels turning which lead me to where I am today.
I still love to design beautiful graphics for blogs, websites and social media, and I've also discovered a new found love for creating printable art which you can download for free in the CreativBlooms Design Library. I know, focus!
Sometimes, I just love to be silly. From dancing around the kitchen with my daughter, to cranking There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back by Shawn Mendes in the car with my kids (yes, I really like that song), to taking dozens of Snapchat photos. I love a good Snapchat filter!
Sometimes you just need to cut loose and act a little crazy, it can help get you through the day!
Here's a little video I made using Snapchat to document the daily struggles of a new blogger. Be prepared, it's really deep.
Just kidding, it's extremely silly!
If you've read this far and I haven't bored you to tears with my story, I want to sincerely say thank you. I hope you find something here that inspires creativity, helps you with your website and motivates you to keep going, even when life is the most difficult.
Stay tuned, more great things to come!
